2009 British Open – Thank You, Tom Watson

I’ve never anticipated watching a final round of any major championship as much as I did when Tom Watson began his Sunday round at Turnberry in 2009. He was 59…. FIFTY NINE! The oldest man to ever win a major is Julius Boros at the age of 48. Watson had no business competing in a major but he was right there on the 18th hole with an 8 footer to win. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. I felt pure agony when the ball came off his putter weak and to the left and watching the 4-hole playoff with Cink was absolute torture.

The story of Turnberry in 2009 will always be a “what could have been” story, but nevertheless, I thank Tom Watson for that British Open week that will never be forgotten.

flattr this!
