You probably wouldn’t catch me working on this drill in my driveway… then again, there isn’t any snow where I live (in Texas). Regardless, Shawn Clement is the real deal and I highly recommend you watch more of his videos (see links below). He really knows his stuff and he has the skills to demonstrate. Truly one of the few “Top Instructors” putting out content regularly on YouTube.

In this video, Clement talks about the importance of making a fluid back swing that is centered at the top. He challenges us to make back-swings with a shovel full of snow and to throw the snow over our shoulder towards the target. Interesting drill that might get some of you northerners to start thinking about golf again.

Let’s face it… Using a long putter and “anchoring” it to your body is a distinctly different stroke than putting with a traditional short putter. And depending on the type of player, long putters can significantly improve someone’s putting ability. In an effort to preserve the integrity of the golf swing, The USGA and R&A announced their decision to ban anchoring in late 2012 to be implemented into the rules of golf starting in 2016. In the video above, this historic and controversial decision is defended by Mike Davis (USGA) and Peter Dawson (R&A).

For me, it comes down to this… If you are a skilled golfer, anchoring your putter won’t provide much of an advantage and is probably just a matter of preference. For less skilled putters, anchoring can be a saving grace that dramatically improves your ability to compete. I don’t think less skilled players should enjoy a wider margin of benefit over the more polished golfers. This historic move, in my non-anchoring opinion, is a good decision that increases the difficulty of my favorite part of the game – putting.

I actually was watching the live coverage on CBS when Oosthuizen dropped this double eagle at the Masters in 2012. It was almost too perfect. From 253 yards, it only took a 4-iron for Louis to land the ball short of the green and watch it run all of the way to the back right pin location. The ball rolled in perfectly as if it was a nicely stroked putt. This double eagle was the 4th ever and the 1st to be recorded and aired live in Masters’ history.

In comparison, Gene Sarazen’s 1935 “Shot heard ’round the world” was made at the 15th hole from 235 yards, with a 4-wood. The difference, Sarazen went on to win in a playoff over Craig Wood. Louis lost his sudden death affair to 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson.

Sidenote: Louis threw the ball into the crowd after pulling it out of the cup… Pretty crazy ass thing to do! I guess he didn’t want to get too hyped with a full day left of golf to play?

The video above is a recording of the entire final round of the 2009 Masters. Start the video at 5:00:00 to begin viewing the first playoff hole between Angel Cabrera, Chad Campbell, and Kenny Perry. Most will remember this Masters as Kenny Perry’s last shot at winning a Major. At the age of 48, Perry led the tournament by two strokes going into the final two holes, but bogeyed 17 and 18 to force a playoff with Campbell and Cabrera. Perry and Cabrera survived the first playoff hole with up-and-down pars to eliminate Campbell. Perry then lost the 2nd playoff hole to Cabrera with a Bogey.

This was Kenny Perry’s second time losing in a playoff at a major, the first being against Mark Brooks at the 1996 PGA Championship. Cabrera’s victory was earned him a second Major title after winning the US Open in 2007 at Oakmont.
He nipped the ball perfectly, even TV commentator David Feherty noted that “he struck it well” while the ball was in the air. However, Immelman’s ball landed with too much backspin and rolled off the front of the green. The ball was meant to go into the water a la 1992 Fred Couples (12th Hole), but it came to rest on a less steep portion of the bank. Immelman managed to get up and down for a Par and went on to win the Masters by 3 strokes over runner-up Tiger Woods.

Trevor held the outright lead in the last 3 rounds of the Tournament, and shared the lead with Justin Rose after Round 1. This was Immelman’s first Major title which netted him a fat $1.35 Million check.

For once, the American team dominated team play at the Ryder Cup, but of course, they proceeded to choke on Sunday. The European team trailed America 10-6 going into the Sunday singles match, just like America had trailed at the 1999 Ryder Cup (at Brookline CC). And, just like Brookline, the trailing team got hot early. This time it was the European team that won the first 5 singles matches and suddenly found themselves with a realistic shot at retaining the cup. Everything went their way, losing only 3 matches on Sunday and winning numerous matches due to America’s poor play at the 17th and 18th hole.

The Cup retaining putt was made by Germany’s Martin Kaymer on the 18th hole, beating Steve Stricker 1UP. After celebrating, Molinari and Woods still remained on the course, with Molinari 1-Down on the 18th. Tiger missed a very short par putt and conceded Molinari’s par putt to give the Europeans a half-point and outright victory (14.5 – 13.5).

“Crowd control” took a new definition for me at the 2012 Ryder Cup when Bubba Watson asked for cheers during his opening tee shot. The video above shows the day 2 response from Ian Poulter. I think these so-called “antics” are great for golf. I have been a huge advocate of loosening up the game, especially amongst pros, to recruit more people and TV viewers to golf. The problem is that we may have a serious rules and etiquette debate on our hands. Riling up the crowd is fun and exciting, but what if it disrupts your fellow competitors? When is it appropriate to pump up the crowd? Does the PGA want this type of fanfare at the Ryder Cup or other golf tournaments?

Players need to consider their opponents before pumping up the crowd. The most appropriate unwritten rule would be to not get the crowd going unless you are last to tee off or last to putt out. There also needs to be consideration to players hitting on neighboring holes. There is obviously a lot to discuss here, and I’m not even getting into the “spirit” or “tradition” of golf (remember, its a “gentlemen’s game” – whatever the fuck that means). Decide for yourself and please comment below so we can start the discussion!

Take a look at how Rickie Fowler got the crowd going on two different occasions at the famous Stadium Course 16th hole (Waste Management Open)…

NOTE: I want to clarify my point to make sure there is no confusion of etiquette at your local club. I hate when people talk or make noise during my address and swing. Why? Because unpredictable noise is very distracting. I must also admit that I enjoy the attention from my golfing partners and any noise that signifies their disinterest can make me upset. I know that it is a little immature, but part of the fun of playing golf with friends is to perform under pressure and to add pressure to others. To sum up, don’t talk when your golfing partner addresses the ball and pay attention to their shots so you can create more excitement, witness unpredictable moments, and help locate golf balls.
